Reunions

                                                    20TH BEAVER REUNION JULY 1984

The first of many reunions came at the end of the 20th season in July. The club 's first season has always been recognized as 1963/64 however ,due to Tom Rockey's great memory , it was brought to Beaver historian Dennis Young ( in 1999 )that was not true. See team history page for more on that.
In any case , Young headed up a committee that included Frank McKinnon to organize a Stag and a Sportsman Dinner. Invited guests were Wayne Gretsky ( thanks to former Beaver and Wayne's Junior coach Muzz McPhereson ), Ted Green ( former NHLer, Beaver coach and now hotel owner in Carman ), Donny Lalonde ( Canadian Boxing Title holder), Jim McFadden ( former NHLer and Beaver ) and Murray Costello ( CAHA president and Red's travelling comapnion ). Wow..what a line up!
At least until Wayne and Muzz were no shows. In came Bobby Hull folks..and the event never missed a beat! In fact it started a relationship between Hull and Carman that would continue on for many years to come.
It started on Friday night at the Legion Hall...to do well the usual. Bobby even stopped in and quickly settled everyone down ( or should I say reved up ) withn his off color jokes. Not to be out done , Bruce North and Doug Orchard followed suit. What a great night.
The next day the boys hit the links ( or did they golf Friday too? oh well) for some good friendly competition. By mid afternoon Red and Bobby were riding in convertibles in the Fair Parade before relaxing to a house that was offered to them to stay at ( thanks Rankins ).
The evening featured marshelling in of ALL the guests , entertainment by Sonitrice Singers and a great meal. Speeches were plentiful but not boring by any means. Red , Bobby , Donny and Teddy spoke but so did Chip Hand and Bob Leslie with some Beaver Banter. All those attending rec'd souviners includng a history book written/typed by Cheryl/Dennis Young sponsored by Janzen Pontiac. Oh and not to be outdone, Chic performed his tradional heel-and-toe baton number to a standing ovation!!  "HOW ABOUT THEM BEAVERS ?"

                                                 25TH BEAVER REUNION APRIL 1989

The Beavers were contacted about playing the Wpg. Blue Bombers in a fun game to help promote them in the country. It just so happened to be the Beavs. 25th too so why not ask the original 63/64 team to play them? It was a great idea and the Alumni came out in groves as 12 or more played plus others were happy to watch. Even the former executive watched from the gondola upstairs....those weren't beers were they?
Behind the bench was the first bench boss too..Colin Rothwell and who else would ref but Lloyd Orchard and Almer McKerlie. No one is quite sure who won but lots of fun was had by both teams. Most fans will remember their old heros skating again but some might remember wide receiver Rod Hill ( who could not skate ) never leaving Ken "Stretch" Hiebert's net..no matter where the puck was.
During the day as well , the Bombers signed autographs...and just maybe a few Beavers did too.

Well Sportsman Dinners are fine and the 63/64 team got to play....why can't we? Therefore for this reunion Dennis put together a tournament featuring a draft of attending Alumni..Honest!
Players gathered on B side hall for THE DRAFT Friday night while the girls participated in a curling 'spiel right outside the windows.Coaches/G.M.s for the evening were Jim Hodgson ( Hodgson Hackers ) , Frank McKinnon ( McKinnon Muckers) , Lee MacLean ( Punch's Prima Donas ) and Ernie Sutherland ( Sudsey's Selects ). Stats were provided to enable these fine hockey minds to make the best picks possible. With that info available it was no surprise that the first overall draft pick--in the first ever Beaver draft was MARSH KENNEDY! His reward...an Altona Maroon jacket. Oh to see his face hahaha.
As another twist to the the selection, certain players were intentionally not picked until the very end..even after Dennis. Sitting some what patiently were Rick Blight, Brian Coates , Bruce North and Pat Owen. That ended the draft , now it was time to brag and refresh before Saturday's tourney.
That day saw the teams hit the ice but it took longer than usual to get them out of the rooms..both before and after games. There were lots of shots at net and a few at each other no doubt. Ben Gay was apparantly sold out at Stevens Drug Store too. Following the games ( again no idea who won but I'm sure someone out there remembers!) all headed to the Legion hall for dinner and a special edition of the Newlywed Game.  M.C.'d by Dennis , it featured the good humoured couples of Hands , Kennedys ,Orchards and Lasts.

                                              CARMAN HOMECOMING JULY 2000

Carman was celebrating 100 years as a town....well can't let that slip by without getting the boys together hey? This one was combined with the Goldeyes who too golfed and enjoyed a huge banquet ( 400+ ) and memorbillia displays for both sport teams @ the hall. No special guests this time just Alumni representing each decade taking their turns at the mic reminicing about those days ( and nights ) long gone.
There was a dance planned but when word got out that Boyne Flood ( Hummer , Chip and Marsh ) was reuniting as well, the place emptied to the arena to witness that. All except the younger generation, they stayed and shot pucks at the electronic score board that was set up inside the hall.

                                                        SEMHL 50TH MARCH 2001

Dennis called for Alumni to attend in late December as a Christmas Party and to kick off Carman's SEMHL entry after 1 year off to rejuvenate. Lots of guys and gals attended a B side hall to enjoy company and cocktails.

On March 23-24, 2001, past players and executive gathered in Morden for a weekend of beers, hockey, beers, banquet and beers! Conceived and organized solely by Dennis Young of Carman, with no monetary league support, it was a phenomenal weekend of fellowship and fun to honour the longest running Senior League in Manitoba history.
Friday began with some games , coinciding with a very successful Stag/Beer Gardens that prompted Dennis to say, "Ok, now I feel better! I can't lose money now!" Saturday saw hockey continue. There were 40+ teams from Morden, Carman, Altona, Winkler, Pilot Mound, Elm Creek and Morris. Plus there were 50+ squads from Oakville, Altona and a Carman/Morden/Manitou combined.
When the showers were done, a Banquet began, sitting over 350. Each team had their own tables that were decorated in their team colours. Terry Dell was asked to say grace prior to the meal, which preceded some SEMHL awards:

-Brian Coates of Carman was pointed out for most points in a season (131).
-Bob Thomson of Miami for only 2 minutes in penalties in 18 years of playing.  Bob said, "It was a bad call!
- Marlin VanRobaeys of Morden as SEMHL All time point leader (864).
-Elmer Hildebrand of Altona for his longevity on SEMHL as president (20 years).
-Dennis was also presented with a plaque for his efforts on the weekend.

A portion of the funds raised over the weekend went to the Carman Beavers ($1,250.00) to help pay off their debts.

                                     40TH BEAVER REUNION APRIL 2005

To commemorate the 40th year in SEMHL by Carman, Dennis Young again organized a reunion. April 16th saw the Community Hall sell out to support not only the Beaver's and Carman Goldeyes 40th Birthdays but too raise money for the cash strapped Recreation Commission.
A stag ( of course ) preceeded the Saturday banquet featuring the announcing of the All Time Beavers by decade (see stats back at home page) , memorbillia, a visit by Saturday's guest speaker Bobby Hull and his Jet pal Ab McDonald. An extra special fearture awaited Bobby , as 8 feet of the original Wpg. Arena urinal was on display....working too! It should be noted that Hull was the Speaker at Young's 20th Reunion in 1984 too.
The big night on Saturday with Hull also had Olympian Rhiannon Leier, Don Percy as M.C. and a table of WHA Alumni that were rounded up by Young for Bobby to visit with. Duke Asmundson, Bob Fitchner , Brian Cradle , Jordy Douglas to name a few.
With ticket sales , silent and open auctions ( featuring Hull auctioning off his Jet sweater..twice ), over $17,000.00 was raised by this event and turned over to Carman Dufferin Recreation Commission.

In an effort to draw some fans and Alumni to the rink to witness the successful team that was assembled for the 45th season, B side was filled with memorbillia , pictures and a bar to enjoy on a night the Beavs were playing Altona! Alas it was a bust but those few who did attend were rewarded with a souviner none the less.

The club opened the 50th season in the SEMHL with a ceremony prior to the opener in November versus appropriately Altona.  Janzen Pontiac Buick and Carman Ford had purchased new retro sweaters for the team and were worn for first time. Dealership owners were honored at centre ice as they unveiled them. Introductions of "famous" Alumni were done by MC Tyler King after Skyer Wiebe sang the anthem. First those able to attend from the 196-64  team were brought on to the ice. Then Alumni holding team records as well as past executive were honored prior to Tom Rockey dropping the ceremonial puck for a face off between Frank McKinnon and Gladwyn Scott. Back inside everyone enjoyed watching the game and/or reminicing.

Dennis had struck a committe of Don Revel, Rob Hamm and Craig Johnston and to begin organizing for what they aniticipated would be a huge response to. Well in one way they did as Alumni showed they preferred playing a game to sitting at a Sportsman Dinner! So a draft was held on Friday evg, as was done for the 25th Reunion, to make up 5 teams to compete Saturday. Older Alumni were asked to Coach and select their teams during that evg which supplied plenty of laughs. Come Saturday games were played with the arena lobby full of beer garden supporters. Players were able to buy 50th shirts and hats for keep sakes.

Following the tourney, the Winnipeg Oldtimers played a up tempo game vs various Beaver Alumni from all decades. The Jets brought Wayne Babych, Ray Neufeld, Trevor Kidd and Mark Chipman too! They signed autograghs and the night turned into day as you would have guessed.

Please see more pictures of this evg under PHOTOS on the Home Page.

This year marks the 60 th season of Carman in the S.E.M.H.L.. On June 24, 2022 the Carman Beaver Hockey Club
hosted Alumni from the 1960s teams to celebrate that. Players and Executive from 1963 thru 1969 were
invited to attend a supper, presentations and entertainment at the Legion. Although their numbers are
dwindling, 12 former players and their wives were able to enjoy an evening of reminiscing while others
sent their best wishes and memories via email.

Alumni Denny Hunter, Neil Strachan and Marsh Kennedy all spoke following a power point presentation made by Dennis Young showcasing past pictures, headlines and stats.
The 1960 Beavers won Championships in 63/64, 66/67 and 67/68. In 69/70 they won the M.A.H.A.
playdowns.

No response...or not near enough...to run an official all decades Dinner etc sigh!!
